Dynamics of Exotic Phenomena in Chemistry
- Hajdúszoboszló, Hungary
- 1989 August 22-25
- Chaired by:
This conference was the first possibility for many Western scientist, to finally meet the person behind the name of the chemical reaction they were working on for nearly two decades. Until 1991, Anatol Zhabotinsky was not allowed to attend meetings outside the Eastern block but in 1989 the conference in Hungary enabled scientist, separated by the 'iron curtain' for so many years, to finally meet in person.

Cover of the special issue (volume 42, issue 2) in the journal Reaction Kinetics & Catalysis Letters in September 1990. It contains 11 lectures and 21 short talks held at the conference (missing: short talks of Ishwar Das and Valentin Krinsky).
Contributed by Vilmos Gáspár on 30 June 2016.
Cover of the conference proceedings with reprints of 8 lectures (p. 1-95), 19 short talks (p. 97-223), and abstracts of 37 posters (p. 225-306). Published by The Hungarian Academy of Sciences and The Hungarian Chemical Society.
The missing 3 lectures and 2 short talks, compared to the special RKCL issue, were a result of not submitting the manuscripts before the confernce.

Excursion to the Hortobágy National Park (World Heritage site since 1999), also called Puszta in Hungary (images courtesy and copyright by Patrick de Kepper).
Horse-drawn carriage (with bus in background): Stefan Müller (first on left bench)
Horse-drawn carriage (with ancient Hungarian Grey cattle): Dick Field (first on left bench) and László Györgyi (first on right bench)
Open market: Finn Hynne (?) with backpack; Kedmar Bar-Eli (??, he is not in the group picture) (far back in the center-left); Ľudovít Treindl, Miklós Orban, and Jean-Pierre Laplante (talking in the center); Peter Gray (far back to the right behing the two women).
Trip to Debrecen: picture in front of the Debrecen Reformed College. This was the last fall, the Lenin statue stood in this place. Before the next fall in 1990, the statue was broken of its base. Interesting is the direction Lenin's hand was pointing - towards the West (images courtesy and copyright by Irv Epstein).
