Line 1 Lane Seminary Dec 9th 1834
Line 2 To the Reverend [unclear] &
Line 3 Faculty of Lane Seminary,
Line 4 Gentlemen
Line 5 Will you have the good-
Line 6 ness to give me a letter of dismission from Lane
Line 7 Seminary.
Line 8 The reason of this request is not that I am
Line 9 not highly gratified with the instruction I have received
Line 10 but that after long, calm and carefull examination I have
Line 11 been driven to the conclusion that the laws which have
Line 12 been [unclear] with their modifications are subversive of
Line 13 natural and unalienable [right] and were by many as I
Line 14 think intended to hinder the progress of a cause which I
Line 15 will ever think it my duty firmly to advocate.
Line 16 Respectfully yours
Line 17 L. D. Butts
