Line 1                          New York Jany 17. 1832

Line 2              My dear Brother Vail

Line 3                                                  Your letter come duly to

Line 4              hand but I deemed it unneccessary to answer

Line 5              it then.  I now most cheerfully congratulate

Line 6              you on your success in raising your $12,000

Line 7              in Cincinnati for the Lane Seminary and

Line 8              hope you will go on till you have raised

Line 9              at least 20,000 $.  Ive that you are the

Line 10            man for this business, and I am convin

Line 11            ced that it would be a loss of time for

Line 12            me to attempt any thing of the

Line 13            kind, when your labors can be obtained

Line 14            as well as mine.  My opinion therefore

Line 15            is that you had better [unclear] on

Line 16            coming here to complete what you be-

Line 17            gun.  Suppose you have Dr. Beechers –

Line 18            appointment renewed about the first

Line 19            of April and thin come on yourself

Written vertically in the left margin:

The state of religion here is interesting, though nothing very [special]

(Lane_097)

Line 1              with it and make your arrangement to re-

Line 2              main till after the anniversaries and Gen.

Line 3              Assembly [unclear] in which time by your

Line 4              [unclear] [unclear] you will be able I think to

Line 5              complete the Prof ships and secure

Line 6              every thing necessary to start the

Line 7              whole concern.  I think this will be about

Line 8              the only way to [secure] what you want.

Line 9              I am now hard at work for the [unclear]

Line 10            Society and shall probably continue

Line 11            in their service or the service of the

Line 12            Am. B C F M.  In the service of these societies

Line 13            where I can preach I find I can do much

Line 14            more than in business where every thing

Line 15            depends on personal solicitation.  While you

Line 16            have a talent for both, you have a peculiar

Line 17            talent for the latter, I mean effective

Line 18            talent.  I hope therefore you will not fail

Line 19            to come on to complete the work at

(Lane_098)

Line 1              Phil,a and here.  Dr. Cornelius has just

Line 2              gone to Boston to arrange and start business

Line 3              for the A.B.C.F.M.  I have written to him to

Line 4              p do what he can to bring the Dr to an

Line 5              unattenable decision.  I feel concerned too

Line 6              in relation to the renewal of his appointment.

Line 7              Do your minutes, show that he has declined?

Line 8              If not how can you reappoint?  If you do

Line 9              not make a new appointment what can you

Line 10            or he say to his people about the negative?

Line 11                 We must be very cautious [less] we

Line 12            suffer the Dr to get entangled.

Line 13            Your letter introducing Dr. Nelson come the other

Line 14            day mailed at Phil,a; but he is not yet here.

Line 15            I saw Geo. Beecher at New Haven and Catherine at Hart-

Line 16            ford both of whom said they expected to go to

Line 17            Cin. on that their father would go.  It seems a

Line 18            greed upon in the family.  C.s book is not pub-

Line 19            lished except for the school.  She expects to

Line 20            leave the school in the spring.  Her health is poor.

Line 21            Mr Patton has just sailed for Charleston S C.

Line 22            and intends to visit Savannah.  Mobile New Orleans –
