This image is of a monument in Doylestown, Ohio of a doughboy in World War I.

This World War I monument in Doylestown, Ohio is described as Doylestown’s most distinctive feature. This feature might be considered Doylestown’s most distinctive because of their dedication to their veterans the massive amounts of veterans and soldiers that would serve in World War I. Wayne County as a territory would volunteer massive amounts of soldiers for World War I, making the depiction and statue of a doughboy in the town square of Doylestown very fitting. In addition, this monument is in part a depiction of the changes that would occur following World War I. The role of both men and women would begin to gradually change. Women would become more involved with the workforce, in factories and other jobs traditionally held by men before World War I. The monument would be dedicated on Armistice Day in 1920.

WWI Parade.jpeg

This image is of a parade of veterans returning from World War I in Shreve, Ohio.

This image of a parade of World War I veterans coming home after fighting overseas showing that having soldiers return to what was “normal” to them before the war would not be possible for all people and all soldiers. Soldiers were celebrated as they came home from war, for fighting against the evil that was prevalent throughout much of Europe, however the return to normalcy that many wished soldiers to return to would not come easily. The mass destruction that took place across seas, as well as the change in the economy in the United States wold take time to recover to their formal glory and continue to build. While prosperity was present soon following the war, the long term effect of the war on the United States economy would eventually lead to the downturn of the economy of the nation as well as the entire world. The depiction on World War I veterans marching in a parade as they came home in Shreve, Ohio would not last very long.

This is an image of Union Station in Creston, Ohio in 1916, with World War I veterans coming home.

This image of Union Station in Creston, Ohio as World War I depicts the importance of World War I soldiers to the economy and livelihood of a place. This image from 1916, before the United States had even declared war on Germany in 1917, shows that the United States had been using what resources they could to help Great Britain and other Allied forces. In 1915, the United States was already getting short on men who were able to work on the ever growing factories. American economic ties with the Allied powers is what would ultimately draw them to form an alliance both before entering the war officially and after entering and fighting against the Central powers. Wayne County, being a major railroad hub, would have large celebrations when men would come home from the War, as can be seen in this image.
